Brake Rotors Replacement: A Step-By-Step Guide

Brake repair directly affects vehicle safety. While it can be attempted as a DIY job, rotor replacement requires specialized tools and expertise. Incorrect installation can lead to weak and unsafe brake performance. So, it’s best to get a professional mechanic to perform the task.

Here’s how a mechanic will proceed:

  1. Park the car and engage the parking brake (or emergency brake).
  2. Check the brake fluid level (in the reservoir under the hood) to make sure it won’t overflow when engaging the brake caliper later.
  3. Loosen lug nuts slightly, then elevate the car and secure it using jack stands.
  4. Remove the lug nuts, followed by the wheel.
  5. Unscrew the brake caliper bolts and take out the caliper. Support it with a wire or hanger to prevent strain on the brake line.
  6. Check the brake line for signs of corrosion. Replace if necessary.
  7. Remove the brake pads and check for signs of wear. Replace a brake pad if worn.
  8. If required, remove the caliper bracket to access the rotor.
  9. Detach the damaged rotor.  
  10. Clean the rotor mounting surface using a brake cleaner.
  11. Install the new rotor. Also, clean the new rotor with brake cleaner before installing it to remove the protective oil coating.
  12. Reinstall the caliper bracket (if removed).
  13. Compress the caliper piston so it will fit over the new pads and rotor. Then, reinstall the brake caliper (and pads) and tighten the bolts using a torque wrench to the manufacturer’s specification.
  14. Check the brake fluid reservoir again. Top off to the recommended level if needed.
  15. Pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm (to restore proper brake pressure).
  16. Recheck the brake fluid reservoir and top off again if needed.
  17. Reattach the wheel and torque the lug nuts to spec.
  18. Repeat the process for other faulty front or rear brake rotors.
  19. Test drive the vehicle to ensure the pedal is firm and there’s no unusual brake noise. The mechanic will continue driving to break in the new rotor and ensure smooth braking system performance.

NOTE: While modern cars have disc brakes, some economy cars may still feature drum brakes on the rear wheels. Older vehicles typically have drum brakes. These systems consist of a drum with brake shoes and pistons to facilitate braking. If you notice reduced braking performance, get the brake shoes checked and replaced ASAP.

    IMPORTANT: Always ensure that the new brake pads and rotors are compatible with your specific vehicle model before a brake replacement.
  • Type of rotor: Solid rotors are the most affordable option, while slotted, drilled, and cross-drilled rotors offer improved heat dissipation and brake performance, typically at a higher price. Carbon ceramic rotors are the most advanced and lightweight option, but they can be significantly more expensive than standard cast-iron rotors.
  • OEM vs aftermarket disc brakes: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) brake parts, including rotors, are pricier and more durable than aftermarket parts.
  • Additional car repairs: As part of the brake service, you may have to get new brake pads along with the new rotor kit. Replacing worn brake pads can cost you an additional $30 to $150 per axle. If you notice uneven tire wear or your steering wheel pulls to one side, a wheel alignment may be necessary, increasing the total repair cost.

  • NOTE: The wear limit of a brake disc is the minimum rotor thickness set by the manufacturer. This number, shown in millimeters, is usually marked on the edge or inside part of the brake disc.

  • Other faulty components: Worn brake pads and calipers, a leaking brake line, or faulty ABS sensors, can create uneven pressure or heat buildup, accelerating rotor damage.
