What Does Honda Service A1 Mean?

The Honda Maintenance Minder system activates the A1 code when your car requires a specific service. The system uses alphanumeric codes that contain a main item and a sub item to convey which service your Honda car requires.

In this case, the A1 service code means:

  • A (main item) = Replace the engine oil and filter
  • 1 (sub item) = Rotate the tires, check tire pressure, and condition

The A1 code applies to almost every modern Honda model, including the Honda Civic, Accord, Odyssey, and HR-V

NOTE: The Honda Maintenance Minder system also informs you about your engine oil life via a percentage, to help you track when service is due. When the oil life reaches 15%, you’ll see the maintenance code on the dashboard. This indicates it’s time to schedule service soon, either at a Honda service center or with a qualified mobile mechanic.

What Are the Benefits of a Honda A1 Service?

The primary benefits of getting an A1 service on time include:

  • Reduced chance of overheating: An oil change keeps the engine in your Honda model lubricated, drawing away heat so it remains cool and runs smoothly for a long time.
  • Improved fuel economy: Changing the oil filter ensures your engine oil stays clean and promotes proper engine functioning, which results in good fuel economy.
  • Prevents expensive repairs: If you don’t change your motor oil and filter, your engine may overheat, blow a gasket, or seize up, which will be costly to fix.
  • Longer tread life and better handling: Tire rotation allows tires to wear more evenly, extending their lifespan. It also helps maintain balanced tread depth, ensuring your Honda car delivers consistent performance and handling.

How Do You Reset an A1 Indicator Light?

After completing the service, you need to reset the vehicle’s Maintenance Minder system so it can properly schedule future routine maintenance alerts.

To do this, you need to:

  1. Turn the ignition to “ON”: The dashboard should light up, but the engine should remain off.
  2. Navigate to the oil life display: Use the Select/Reset knob or scroll through the infotainment/steering wheel menu until “Engine Oil Life” or a percentage shows up.
  3. Press and hold the Select/Reset or Enter button: In most models, hold for about 10 seconds until the indicator begins to blink. In some older models, you may need to press and hold for 5 seconds if the display reads “Engine Oil Indicator %.”
  4. Push the button again to confirm: Once the indicator blinks, press the same button again. This should confirm the reset, and the oil life percentage should revert to 100%.

If you’re unsure about resetting the indicator light properly, it’s best to consult a mechanic to handle the process for you.

When Should You Get a Honda A1 Service?

If your Honda Maintenance Minder system displays “A1” on your dashboard, you should get an oil change and tire rotation service ASAP. In case the Honda service code hasn’t appeared yet, it’s best to follow a regular maintenance interval, typically every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

That said, some conditions may cause the Honda service code to appear sooner, including:

  • Frequent heavy towing
  • Excessive off-roading
  • Racing, especially with a non-racing vehicle
  • Extreme weather conditions

How Much Does a Honda A1 Service Cost?

The cost varies depending on the Honda dealer or service center you visit. Let’s take a look at what Honda A1 services usually cost:

What’s the Difference Between an A1 and a B1 Service?

Honda B1 service goes beyond the basic procedures included in A1 maintenance

The A1 maintenance code primarily addresses routine tasks — engine oil changes and tire rotations. In contrast, the B1 service code covers scheduled maintenance for systems related to safety and performance, like:

  • Brake evaluation
  • Brake fluid check
  • Transmission fluid inspection
  • Cabin air filter replacement
  • Suspension and steering check

What Other Services Should You Consider for Your Honda?

Here are some other crucial services you should get in conjunction with regular maintenance tasks:

  • Drive belt and hose inspection: Helps identify wear or cracks in the drive belt as well as in vacuum, PCV, and air intake hoses before they fail.
  • Lights and indicators check: Ensures headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are working properly.
  • Exterior and interior inspections: Helps detect leaks, rust, or minor issues (e.g., a windshield chip) that could worsen without repair.
